Geeks? Ghostbusters!
Posted 7/2/2009 by Derek Meister

It's hard to believe it's been 25 years since the release of the classic movie Ghostbusters, but for many Geek Squad Agents, the anniversary of the film made us want to celebrate.  After all, how could we NOT love a comedy involving four guys using super-science to combat the supernatural?

The release of a Blu-ray 25th anniversary edition of the film last week is like welcoming an old friend back in shiny, new HD duds.  As soon as the movie starts up again, I'm instantly transported to the first time I saw this classic as a kid in the theaters, and it is wonderful!

Last Minute DTV Tips
Posted 6/12/2009 by Derek Meister

It's been 13 years since the Telecommunications Act of 1996 mandated the DTV transition that's taking place today. However, that doesn't mean there won't be some growing pains for viewers of over-the-air television. Here's some last minute DTV tips for those still working on their own transition:

The DTV transition only affects over-the-air broadcasts received through a regular rooftop or set-top ("rabbit ears") antennas. If you get your television service through satellite or cable providers, you will not be affected. If your TV lists itself as having a DTV (or ATSC) tuner, you are ready, on the other hand, just because the TV says "digital" somewhere on the front does not mean the system is ready.

Posted 6/11/2009 by Adam Mills

This year at E3 Microsoft announced some new additions to the XBOX360 video game console that will make it a more social experience for players. One of the fastest growing social platforms on the web right now is Facebook. Dealing with Post-DTV Stress
Posted 6/5/2009 by Derek Meister

I recently had an opportunity to man a DTV question phone bank on behalf of Geek Squad and I came across a fair number of questions that could be best summed up as, "I know about the DTV transition. I have the converter box. It's not working. HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLP!"

Here's some tips for those now trying to troubleshoot their post-DTV setup before the conversion takes place on June 12:

Geek Squad supports Ivy Bean, and everyone seeking to embrace technology
Posted 5/21/2009 by Colin Burns

I'd like to start this post by making the record clear: We are proud to have reached out to Ivy Bean and get her set up on Twitter. With her permission, we also publicized her accomplishment to encourage other older people to get online.

In fact, I'm happy to share how this all came about. On Friday, May 15th we celebrated "Silver Surfers Day." This promotion started about 7 years ago to encourage older people to get online. We heard about Ivy Bean nearly two years ago, when she tackled Facebook as a 102 year old. We were impressed. We decided to seek her out and see if she would like to give Twitter a whirl. As it happens - she did! Ivy has a genuine interest in connecting with the world outside of Bradford and her residence. She is attracted to the simplicity of Twitter. We were thrilled to set up Ivy, but we were also excited to tell her story. After all, the point of Silver Surfers Day is to get older people online. This seemed like a great way to do it.

Star Trek is set to release today and I couldn’t be more excited! Sure, I’m thrilled that the new movie is coming out soon, but what’s even more exciting is all the fancy merchandise that gets released to help promote the movie itself. You’ll see tons of blogs about the movie itself, but I think I’ll change things up a bit by focusing on all the nifty gizmos that would make any Trekkie jump for joy.

There’s a new Star Trek movie coming out today and it got me thinking – what has Star Trek contributed to the modern-day universe? Could it be possible we owe some modern day conveniences to this long-running series of fictional TV shows and movies?
